Biemba Kahalu Maliti

I am a senior nurse leader with 26 years of nursing experience during I rose to the highest institutional clinical nursing leadership position as Chief Nursing Officer Oncology in 2016. I am currently heading psychiatric nursing services at Zambia’s only specialist mental health hospital as Chief Nursing Officer Psychiatry after leading cancer nursing services for 16 years (2008-2024) at Cancer Diseases Hospital the only public specialist cancer treatment centre. I also spent 2 years in nursing education at Lewanika College of Nursing 2006-2008, and my early nursing years from 1999-2003 were spent in intensive care and emergency nursing. With support from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Zambia (NMCZ) and the Ministry of Health (MoH) I advocated for and coordinated the development of Bachelor of Science Oncology Nursing and Advanced Diploma in Registered Oncology Nursing curricula in order to ensure professional development and sustainability of oncology nursing in Zambia. I have presented at several international, regional and local conferences such as the International Conference on Cancer Nursing, ONS Congress, AORTIC, MD Anderson's Global Academic Platform, ECSACONM, Best of ASCO, SIOP and National Cancer and Palliative Care Conference. Over the years I have participated in many research initiatives both local and international with publications in CJON, ecancer, sarjnhc, cancer, Annals of Palliative Care, APJON. I have contributed to development of strategic and policy documents at national level such as Nursing and Midwifery Protocols, National Cancer Control Strategic Plan, National Nursing and Midwifery Strategic Plan, Palliative Care Strategic Plan, Early Breast Cancer Diagnosis Manual, Palliative Care Training Manual and serve on the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Zambia Standards and Compliance Committee. I am the founding president of the Zambia Oncology Nurses Society, have served on the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care member council, East Central and Southern African College of Nursing Clinical Practice Faculty, World Health Organisation GICC nurse lead for Zambia and current nurse representative on the SIOP Africa Board. I am also currently part of the International Gynaecologic Cancer Society conference planning committee for 2025.
